Batik Painting at Central Market!

It is a short school holiday, thanks to the National Independent Day, kids have a week long break so I decided to take a few days off to arrange for a short trip. Time to learn more about our own homeland through cuti-cuti Malaysia, which literarily means travel in Malaysia.  :)

(Of course I may opt to leave them in the day care, but what better way to learn but to walk the walk and experience the outside world?)

We have one extra day before the planned trip, to fully utilize the promotion period (until 31/8) for the newly launched MRT line which links the urbur townships from Sungai Buloh to Kajang with the city center and other parts of the Klang Valley I decided to take the duo to Central Market, or better know to the local as Pasar Seni (central art market) for a visit, and to get our hands dirty with some batik painting. I have read about it sometimes ago and the reviews were mostly good. So here we were, paid just $1.80 (adult) and $0.90 (kids 6y and albvoe) for the comfortable ride from Damansara Mutiara station (eCurve) and reached straight to Pasar Seni station.

We approached the friendly information counter staff and asked for direction (save us time to search!), and Aina Artwork Studio  was easy to locate -just head straight and it's at the end of the exit door.

We choose our frame each - RM10 for a small frame and RM15 for a big frame, there were plenty of template designs to choose from, E picked a Nemo fish while C was insistent with hisbiscus flowres, and I was attracted to the Helaconia drawing which reminded me of our garden.

After a brief introduction by the helpful staff. We started painting right away.

Everyone was so concentrated to make the best painting, just look at E..

And we were all done 30 minutes later!

Pretty happy with their creations. Not bad for a first timer:))

The collage below shows the progress of my helaconia painting.. it's indeed pretty easy as we were "guided" by the template made with wax (that would be the next class I aim to join - batik drawing with wax!)

Before leaving, we decided to be tourists for a day - let's shoot a picture for memory! :))

Happy Teacher's Days! handmade specials..

I have always find teacher a noble profession. It's a job that requires lots of patience, passion and dedication (without any of these one may goes insane).

I'm glad I had caring teachers in my tender years who had guided me tirelessly and coached me both in studies as well as sports. My primary school days were filled with exciting adventures & wonderful memory, a large part of it was thanks to my teachers.

Anyway, it's Teacher's Day and I thought the teachers deserve appreciation from their students for the great effort. C has shown so much improvement in her study; she looks forward to going to school every morning and reading her new book to me whenever I'm home, what more could a mom ask for? :)  On the other hand, E is so fond of his school teachers, especially the science and computer teachers (they are his absolute favorites!). 

So when I suggested to make some DIY gifts for the teachers, the duo excitedly agreed.

Instead of a card, we decorated a "Thank You Bag" using plain brown bags and sharpies (I got the brown bags from Daiso for RM5.90 for a pack of 5). We then filled them up with our hand-painted flower pots & a packet of sunflower seeds. You can read about the making of the DIY hand-painted flower pots here.

Wa-la.. Done!

I especially like this blue hair boy by E :)

He still has few more bags to make as his school's celebration is scheduled on a later date.

As we ran short of the terracotta pots, I've bought some cute mugs as additional gifts. Hope the teachers like them as much as the painted pots. :D

We still have a few more brown bags to decorate (and I shall update this post once they are ready), but as of now, we just want to shout-out-loud...

If you are parents, I would encourage you to spare sometime to prepare something for your little one's well-deserving teachers too. Let's spread the love around and they may boomerang back to you in the most unexpected way. ;-)

{Making of a Princess Dream} DIY Belle's Costume

We watched Disney's latest debut, Beauty and the Beast, in the theater lately and both C and I were captivated by Belle's gorgeous golden gown. So light, so dazzling.

So in attempt to construct a princess dream for my little girl, I gathered my tools and started cutting.

Here's the outcome, took me 3 weeks to complete it - well, I only managed to sew 1 or 2 hours a week, plus the embezzlement really took quite some time.

She's loving the dress. Made me the proudest mom on Earth :D

This is not a complete tutorial (pardon me but that is really extremely time consuming), it shall gives you a pretty good idea what you need and how to to re-create this dress.

The bodice. I used this light cotton for inner lining, need something breathable for our hot weather.

Exploring the effect of the front pleat.

Patience is what it takes. Needle by needle, pleat by pleat.

Almost there. The bottom skirt is actually a dress that I made for C when she was little, it's just perfect to be used as the bottom for the skirt by removing the elastic. Initially I wanted to make the dress longer, but on a second thought, this length is just nice for her without fear of tripping over the long edges.

Attaching the embezzlement was the most tedious part as I am not really good with hand-sewing, but since I can't find the right sparkly ribbon I wanted, I settled with these golden color embezzlement. 

Fit for a princess dress, don't they? ;-) 

C even helped to sew some of them *note: parental guide needed when using needle & thread* 

She was eagerly looking forward to wearing this dress. What can I say? It's totally worth it to see her proud smile and spontaneous dance move right after putting on the dress. I'm pretty sure today will be remembered forever by both of us.. :)

{Art Attack} DIY Painted Pots

Teachers Day is approaching (mid May) and I asked E what would he like to give to his teachers? He showed me his gardening book, "painted seed pots!", he proudly announced.

So we gathered some mini terra cotta pots from from the RM5 shop, Daiso, and started working on the painting with our Arcrylic paint. It was fun, really!

Pineapple & Ladybug. The ladybug was created by accident (supposed to be watermelon) as E made the dots into circular shape instead of seed shape, so we decided to make some modification to it and turns out pretty cute!

Red watermelon, he's not very good with the brush yet so I added some whites to cover up.

Yellow watermelon, just some variety of watermelon :))

These are the materials we used:

• some terra cotta pots

• Arcrylic paints and some brushes

• color pallettes

• translucent spray paint (coating to ensure the pots stay waterproof)

Almost there. I was doing QC to touch up on any imperfection while the duo had a tea break. :D

Final touch, the spray paint protects the paint and adds a glossy layer over the acrylic paint. Make sure you do the spray outdoor and wear a mask if you may, not recommend to let little ones handle this task.

Honestly I can't quite decide. I like them all and we plan to make a couples more for ourselves.

Next we just have to fill up the pots with some rocks, soils and flower seeds, and wrap up as a pretty gift for their favorite teachers. 

Hopefully the teachers will like them as much as we do! <3

Fun Climbing @ Funtopia Courtyard

It's a short holiday week, big guy and I decided to take a day off and bring the duo for some fun time in town, since we only have a day to spare. I have been scouting around for some activities around town.. Kidzania, done that; jungle gym, many times; park & outdoor picnics, done N times; KLCC petroscience, done that; Farm in the city, checked; National science center, yep; Planetarium, that too; spaceship galatica? Yes yes; Aquaria, zoo, KL bird park, butterfly park, done done done done... so where else??

Finally, I stumbled accross a relatively new kids gym in town - Funtopia Courtyard @ SS15, Subang Jaya.

It's an indoor gym that offers lots of activities to burn the energy - climbing, hanging bridge, rope walk, giant slide... However, if your little one has fear of height, you may want to let him / her observe and warm up first before signing up.

The first sight is enough to wow them.

They began with the safety briefing and putting on the safety gears.

Next, the hanging bridge. It's about 3 storey high and can be intimidating for young kids, but both C and E did it with a smile. The last visit to Club Med had prepared them well.

Team work - they had to pull themselves from one end to the other using the "skate board".

The giant slide... For real adrenaline rush. E went first.

Followed by C with a whoosh..

You could repeat this as many rounds as you wish.. The kiddos simply love this!

When the 1 hour period is over, they headed over to this children play area which has no additional charge. Another 30 minutes here and they came out all smiling from cheek to cheek and all covered in sweat. If you have younger toddler who's too young for all the gym activities, this would be just perfect.

We ended the visit with a sumptuous meal at the Notty Nuri restaurant which is located one floor below Funtopia. Yum yum... Their BBQ ribs is no doubt the best in town!
