{Book Review} On a Beam of Light: The Story of Albert Einstein

I believe it is every parent's dream that our little ones will grow into "somebody" someday; may not be somebody famous or rich or popular, but just somebody good, loving, caring, strong, wise, innovative, successful.. you know, just somebody, whatever that means to you.

I hope my duo will learn to be good leaders, with creative minds and self initiative to make things happen and a loving heart that care for others. However, I know I can't force them into that somebody, instead I can only coach and inspire them and hoping one day they will find their paths.

So I have been searching for books about great leaders and inventors that I thought would have a good influence on them, and this is the first of the series I've found.

On a Beam of Light: The Story of Albert Einstein

Written by Jennifer Berne and illustrated by Vladimir Radunsky, this is a beautifully illustrated picture biography ideal to introduce who Albert Einstein is to the early readers. However, for older kids who do want to know more about Einstein, they may find this too brief.

It's written in a manner to trigger curiousity.

The power of knowledge and to pursue it.

This picture book explains in a manner that the little minds can understand, that how an ordinary boy with curious fanscination about the world around him eventually grew into a great scientist that leaves a mark in the mankind history.

My little guy was fascinated by this book and had been reading it over and over again. I can see that seed of curiosity is growing in him as he has been popping more questions about how things work, how things are created, more than ever.

"The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiousity has its own reason for existing

- Albert Einstein

You can find this book on amazon.com, goodreads.com or most local bookstores. I got our soft cover book from the scholastics which is much cheaper than getting a hard cover. :)

{DIY Craft} Let's Go Fishing!

My duo love to play pretended fishing, I had to join them to be on a pretended boat (our bed), sail on a pretended sea (the floor), eat pretended fish (non existence). So I thought to make them a DIY fishing game since we managed to find some small magnets from the RM5 store, Daiso. I knew what to do with them the moment I saw them.

My duo totally IN LOVE with this gam. Played for over an hour. Played before lunch. After lunch. Before shower. After shower. Just non-stop fishing

But it's more than just a game.

Noticed all the colorful fishes? I used this game to train my 3yo little C's color recognition, counting and eye-hand coordination.

Here's how we play. I gave each of them a fishing rod. When I call out a color, they have to catch the fish in the right color, else they have to return it into the pool.

If the color of the catch is correct, the fish is theirs to keep. At the end of the game, they will count their catch and the one with the most fish, wins. I purposely made odd number of fishes so it's impossible to have a tie game. Hehe.

Wonder why I placed the fishes on a Lego board? I spun it around as if the fishes were moving around. This really made the duo super excited as it just got harder to make a catch.

Next I intend to create a score chart, so each colored fish has a different score, this is for my 6yo captain E who is fascinated with mathematics, he loves it when I challenge him with arithmetic game.

Here's what you need to DIY:
• Felts (or cardboard cards)
• Rod (I used ballon stick before hub upgraded it to a proper stick)
• Strings or ropes
• Paper clips
• Small round magnets (attach the string with glue or epoxy)
30 minutes of preparation, endless weekend fun.

That's it. Let's go fishing!

{Made By PH} CNY Spring Dresses for my Little Lady

It's a month away from Chinese New Year but I decided to start designing the CNY dress for my little lady early. It is a tradition to wear new clothes for the new year to signify a good beginning, or at least for the first few days of new year as CNY celebration lasts for 15 days, so I intended to make more than just one dress.

Last year I was all crazy over cheongsam that I made 3 sets for my little C, you can check them out here. This year, I decided to make her some petite spring dresses instead. I'm not driven by fashion trend, but instead let my inspiration drives my creation.

I have been searching online for the right patterns, but nothing that fits what I have in mind. So I decided to draft my own pattern this time. First 2 dresses were made with same pattern while the 3rd dress was a slightly modified pattern. Anyone is keen for a FREE pattern and tutorial? Please do put in your comment before I decide if I shall spend time on preparing the tutorial for the dress. In case you have not noticed,I have  been spending less time blogging nowadays as I wish to spend more time with my loved ones. There will be more random sharing on the Facebook page instead.

Anyway, allow me to showcase the dresses.. Proudly made by PH. :)

🌺 The Spring Blossom Dress
This is a US designer fabric, a very loud print full of flowers but I am confident that she can carries it. I kept it simple as the fabric is the main attraction here.

The dress looks so sweet on her, however I did not managed to take a photo as she grabbed my hands to dance with her right after putting it on.

🌼 The Little Daisy Dress
Somehow I already have envisioned the pattern in mind when I set my eyes on this fabric. The little white daisies over a sea of mustard yellow, just perfect for a vintage dress with a petite collar.

It turned out fine. She loved it the minute she saw this new dress.

Lace all around the waist, perfect match with the collar and the big white buttons on the back. I used a loop button design here so I can easily adjust the buttons as she grows bigger.

🍒 The Red Polkadot Dress
The last piece and my personal favorite, as this is my childhood dream dress. I saw this on one of the Japanese cartoon series but back then we did not had the luxury of window shopping nor tailor made dress for children.

Here it is, cherry red Polkadot with a tiny collar, perfect for a fine little lady.

I added some lace on the shoulder straps and handmade buttons on the collars following readers' comments. Those buttons were made using the handmade kit from Daiso, the RM5 shop.

Couldn't wait to let her wear them all, but resist, I must, or I'll be breaking the CNY tradition.

So, tell me, which of the 3 dresses are your favorite? :)
