Tailor and Craft Supplies Stores around KL

Disclaimer: This post has nothing to do with the kiddos, but for crafters like me who enjoy sewing, crafting and DIY. Hope you find this useful :)

Among the frequently asked questions I often got asked ever since i started my craft project is - "where do you find the supplies?"

Instead of repeating my answer over and over again, I guess it's better to share it here for benefits of everyone..

Here is the list of tailor and craft supplies shops in Klang Valley or Selangor area that I know of. Some through personal experience while some are through word of mouth (listing in random sequence, not of any preference):


• Syarikat Sin Wah Tailor Supplies at PJ Old Town, located behind mcDonald's, is a double stores shop lots with quite a vast selection of tailor and craft supplies with reasonable price, from buttons, ribbons, threads to batting, felt, buckles and other accessories. Oh, did I mentioned they opened on Sunday? In the morning only.

• Handy & Trendy Tailor Supply at SS2, occupying half store space, it's located on the same row as CIMB bank, small but compact old timer selling mainly tailor supplies such as buttons, laces, threads and many other accessories at very reasonable price and attentive service. Close on Sunday.

• Cottage Patch in Jalan Ampang, a small shop located along the bustling roadside of Ampang main road that can often be easily overlooked. It offers wide range of imported textiles, quality tailor and craft supplies (which they talk about their product quality with pride). They are also Authorized dealers for Brother machine and offer sewing and quilting classes. Personally I like the place for their super friendly service. I got my Brothers machine there and the 2 ladies there spent nearly an hour giving me free hands on lesson on the machine before I finally decided to buy. That's how friendly they were!

• The Haby and Wool, 2nd 3rd floor of Ampang Park. A good variety of tailor supplies from buttons, threads, crochet, books, felt, battings etc but I find it rather pricey in compare to other shops, probably due to the rental and location. Service by the ladies there are prompt and friendly.

• Yee Button House in SS2 (behind McDonald's) is quite a popular place for tailor supplies and textiles by many, they have a wide range of imported fabric and accessories however the price can be on the higher end compare to some other store. The service was prompt and friendly and they offer many lessons for beginners and advanced crafters too.

• Art Friends in The Garden shopping malls has wide range of craft supplies from sewing, painting, paper craft, DIY to party supplies. Good place to hunt for tools but can be slightly pricey probably due to its location - the Garden mall. If you have a member card you are entitled to 10% discount.

• Spotlight is latest addition to the list but is definitely one of the largest in terms of size and offerings. It's products ranges from fabrics, sewing supplies, DIY craft, party supplies, ready-made soft furnishing cushions, curtains) as well as kitchen and home deco items. But many of my friends shared the same feedback - items are many but not quite cheap. Anyway, visit them to find out by yourself, or you may visit their website here.

Other popular choices by other's recommendation.. 

• Macy in Petaling Street, it's an old timer that has a vast selection of tailor and craft supplies. However I had not visited that place for years so can't tell much about its service.

• Bunga Resen online store. It was recommended by one of my crafty bug friends, I have yet to check it out. However was told that they have a variety of craft supplies at attractive low price. If you happen to have visited the site and made some purchases, feel free to comment!

• Popular Fabric. This online store was recommended by one of my craft friend who is also their frequent patron. Visit the website for fabric, patterns or even books and tools!

Fun Abacus Game with Cherios 小小算盘游戏

With 2 young toddlers, keeping them to sit still when having their breakfast seems like a mission impossible. Somehow my little girl always want to try her elder brother's portion and end up creating a mess or a frustrated baby.

So when I saw this idea while surfing, I though its worth a try, since all I need is some Wholemeal Cherios and Spaghetti.

It helps them to practice counting as well as work out the eye-hand coordination with small objects. It may seem easy to us adult, but its quite a challenge for the little fingers.

The elder brother was watching cartoon at first and finally couldn't resist to help up and eventually arranged all Cherios into each spaghetti sticks. :)

I quite like this game, it's simple, low cost and completely safe for little ones; just have to ensure you break the spaghetti sticks to shorter length.

Fun time can be simple and low cost.. Cheers!

Little Explorer's Backpack! 小小探险家背包

Yay... Finally, the crafting project I was working on has completed!

Here I present to you, the Little Explorer's toddler backpack for my little boy. A bag of stars and outer space. Only for the little adventurer.

As there are more school works from his preschool nowadays, the cute little monkey backpack bought by my good friend is a bit too small to fill all his books, so I decided to put my skill to test and make a full functional backpack for him. I am just glad it turned out alright after few nights of hardwork. *relief*

Since I am using denim fabric with tiny stars print, and he had recently learnt about the Milky Way and the stars and planets from his Junior Encyclopedia book, I thought of making him some rockets and planets. Seen here are Uranus, the beautiful blue planet with a ring and our beautiful Earth, made on his request. :)

"1, 2, 3, Blast Off!!"

The deep side pockets for his water bottle and pencil case on each side, fit just nicely.

I made 2 front pockets for his snack box and stationeries, and the great Explorer's name hidden underneath the backpack cover... He really loved this.

Ample space inside, I used his favorite heart print cotton for inner lining, and attached with more pockets. Pockets for pens, pencils, rulers or any tiny little things that he often brought back from school. They always come handy. :)

I made these adjustable shoulder straps for adjustable length and a hook for hanging. These little accessories took extra hours but are certainly useful to have to ensure maximum comfort and better back support.

My little Explorer couldn't wait to try out his new bag the moment he saw it in the morning.

Curiously exploring  the hidden magnetic snap on buttons on the opening.

I hope this bag will last him for a long long time, or at least until his primary school. I used all the proper materials this time - denim fabric, bag batting, canvas straps, metal buckles etc, took me sometimes to gather all the little accessories but they certainly ensure better durability.

Well, well... I have to admit, making this backpack is NOT EASY AT ALL and I'm glad I had successful completed it. I shall compile a tutorial soon but do give me some times, there are a lot of steps involved and will not be easy to explain them clearly.. To my surprise, while there are plenty of tutorials for tote bags, sling bags, messenger bags, there aren't much tutorial available on backpack. You can check out made-by-rae where she has a toddler backpack pattern for sell. I just designed my own style without using any pattern, call me stubborn but I like to test my limit. :)

Latest Craft Project... What could it be?

I'm really excited now that I just have to post a preview of the project I'm working on to show everyone here.

It's all about space, rocket & adventure to the space. I made the 2 planets as per my little captain's request. Can you guess what planets are they?

As I can only spare so little time to work on this project, I certainly hope I can finish it soonest possible before his school term break begins.

Apple of My Eyes, a Little Ruffled Dress 我的小苹果裙子

It's been a while since I last made a new dress for my little girl, the work had kept me busy. So I decided to make her something special this time.. What I called, the Apple of my Eyes.

It's a little tiered ruffled dress that can grow with my baby, who seems to grow a few inches every now and then without me realizing. :) It has an elastic chest band and button-on shoulder straps, so I'm certain that it can easily fits my little darling for the next 1-2 years.

The back view - I can do a straight strap on or cross strap for a little change. However I plan to change the buttons to the inner side of the dress instead, look neater that way.

Now let's zoom in on the fabric. Love the little apples and the polka-dots, don't they look so sweet? This eye catchy fabric, 100% cotton came all the way from UK, a thoughtful gift from her uncle abroad. It's been sitting in the shelf for a while until I finally thought of a design that fit.

No tutorial this time round, I admit I was a little lazy and just wanted to focus on finishing the dress, undisturbed. I made this piece overnight after a tiring working Saturday. It eased my mind by taking off the troubles that had been clouding in me, and it certainly pleased me by looking at my own handmade, and felt good to wear it onto my sweetie pie.

She obviously likes the dress. First thing she did after I wore it onto her was to look at her own reflection in the full body mirror. :)

You may refer to my previous post on the Little Sunshine Ruffled Dresswhich has the tutorial links for making ruffled dress. To make this dress, I used 3/4 yard of main fabric (the apple print) and 1/4 yard of matching fabric (the polka-dot print) for the edges and elastic band.

Tutorial: Personalized Bunting for Kid's Room 特制小童彩旗

I have always wanted to do a bunting for my little boy's room, something that makes the room special to him. Unfortunately I either lack the time or there is always other things that pops up.

Excuse no more, I finally did it today with my little boy's help. It's just like another weekend art project we usually do together.

Doesn't it matches the white cabinets just perfectly? :)

The making is simple, only took us about 30 minutes and requires nearly zero cost. I certainly don't mind to make a few more for the fun of rotation.

Interested to make one? Just follow the steps below:

1. Gather some papers of different colors, and a bias tape of about 80cm long (adjust according to the desired width as per your cabinet)

2. Draw a triangle on a piece of paper, stack few pieces of papers together and cut all at one go. In my case, I only need 5 pieces of them.

3. Now here comes the fun part. Start decorating each pieces with market pens. Draw the letters, decorate with any patterns, stamps etc. Get your little one involved and watch his creativity flows.

My little boy happily drew the "a" and all the little balloons around it. Not perfect but this is for his room after all, so good to let him feel the ownership :)

Remember to use washable marker pen in case your LO stains his own hands or clothes.

4. Using a sewing machine, sew on each piece of triangle onto the bias tape in a straight line. You may opt to use glue or stapler, they should work just well.

5. Once you have sewn on all the pieces, hang it up using a transparent tape and you are done! :)


Love to see his name hanging high in his room. Oh and how he loves it too, he held his chin so high :)
