Homemade Play-Doh, Cheap & Fun!

Look at these lovely little doh balls, don't you just love the vibrant colors?

These homemade play doh are stretchable but not sticky to the hands, feels just like the real thing, only better. There is no preservative, no harmful chemicals as only edible ingredients are used. Hence, absolutely toddler friendly! *see footnote

Making it only involves 4 simple steps..

What you need:
1 cup of water
1 table spoon of cooking oil
1 cup of all purpose flour
1/2 cup of salt
2 teaspoon cream of tartar
Some food coloring of your choice

All ingredients above can be obtained from bakery supplies stores or supermarket.

1. Boil a cup of water in the pot, once the water is boiling, add a table spoon of cooking oil, follow by the dough mixture (salt, flour, cream of tartar)

2. Cook the mixture for about 2-3 minutes, constantly stirring it until it turns into like mashed potatoes. Add a bit of hot water if its too powdery to dissolve all the flour.

3. Let the dough mixture cool for a while, then get a palmful of them and roll into ball shape. Add a drop of food coloring if desired. I used my fondant coloring as seen here.

4. The ready made play doh can be kept in airtight container and shall be good to keep for weeks. I re-used the BPA free container I used to store baby's food and purée, how convenient is that!

See, just that simple! Now I don't have to pay RM6.90 for each playdoh box that often dry up too fast, and I can used these little dough balls to reinforce the theory of color mixing with my little Captain the next time I make them, cool...

As I was making these, my baby girl came looking for me, so I let her sit in her high chair as I was mixing the dough. I gave her a small ball of dough and she was so happy rolling and patting it. Cheap and harmless toy that bring smiles to my sweetie pie, now Monday doesn't seem so dull to me anymore. :)

That's all peep, be happy, be crafty!

* Attention Please!
While homemade playdoh is chemical free, please ensure you keep a close eye on your little ones all the time to avoid the risk of choking. The colorful dough may be too attractive to the little eyes. So parents, do watch out. I told my girl to smell it, touch it and firmly told her she this is not food, it's toy, however since she is still under 2 year old, I will be extra cautious.

Tips:
If you do not have the food container like what I existing have, sweat not. You may make use of existing playdoh containers that you have bought previously, or just get from the food container in supermarket, e.g. Ziplock, Toyogo.

  3. Thanks anonymous!

I used Take & Toss container by Fist Few Years, come in stack of 12. However you may purchase ZipLock or other brands, search under kitchen sections alternatively just reuse existing playdoh boxes that you may have. As for food coloring, you may get from any bakery supplies store or the baking section from the supermarket.
